Kenworth and Toyota Motors are two of the many partners participating in the S2S (Shore-To-Store) project, a 12-month, $82.5 million program designed to demonstrate and test zero-emission transport technology and the respective supply chain against the backdrop of the Port of Los Angeles. The Port recently welcomed five new Kenworth hydrogen-powered FCEV (fuel cell electric vehicle) Class 8 trucks and two new hydrogen fueling stations. And soon, the project will expand to include five more heavy-duty Kenworth FCEV trucks, two battery-electric yard tractors, and two battery-electric forklifts. The Class 8 Kenworth T680 trucks all feature an FCEV powertrain from Toyota Motor North America, while Shell designed and built the project’s high-capacity fueling stations.
A Large-Scale Demonstration
The FCEV trucks are currently in service for trucking companies Total Transportation Services Inc. (TTSI) and Southern Counties Express (SCE), as well as Toyota Logistical Services and UPS. The modified Kenworth T680 trucks perform local pickup and delivery jobs, drayage near the Port, and short regional hauls.
“This significant fuel cell electric vehicle program at the Port of Los Angeles is a key element of Kenworth’s industry-leading efforts of ‘Driving to Zero Emissions’ in the U.S. and Canada,” says Kenworth General Manager and PACCAR Vice President Kevin Baney. “We’ve built all 10 of the Kenworth T680 FCEVs involved in the project, and the first five vehicles are now delivered to fleets in California for commercial service at the Port of Los Angeles.”
The Port Of The Future
The S2S project is one of 16 near-zero or zero-emission demonstrations currently taking place at the Port of Los Angeles. The 12 partners in the S2S project plan to study how the zero-emission fuel cell and battery-electric vehicles handle the demands of distribution and transit duties in the Southern California market. The S2S project will also measure the nitrogen oxide, particulate matter, and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as other pollutants to determine the actual reduction of emissions to the local environment.
